Paleo - Week 1

So we survived our first week following a fairly strict Paleo "Diet". It wasn't as hard as we had originally expected but it really isn't a "diet", rather it's a lifestyle change. We made the decision to head down this path after joining Crossfit Delray Beach.  I can only speak for myself here, but there have been too many times where I would focus on only the physical side of things and completely forget the nutritional side.  It's such common sense and for some reason many of us ignore it. The old saying that diet/nutrition is 80% of the equation is more than 100% correct.  So we put our flag in the soil on Monday and got crackin!

Just a refresher for those just joining the regularly scheduled program...

The Paleo diet is simple yet remarkably effective for fat loss and halting or preventing a number of degenerative diseases. To reap the benefits of the most effective nutritional strategy known, one need simply build meals from the following:

  • Lean proteins (ideally) grass fed meat, free range fowl and wild caught fish
  • Seasonal fruits and vegetables
  • Healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, and coconut oil

The first thing we did was buy Robb Wolf's book, "The Paleo Solution" so we could truly understand the "science" behind eating Paleo and how it really benefits the body. I was tired of hearing about and often following fad diets with no real personal knowledge or understanding of them.  Robb is a former research biochemist and one of the world’s leading experts in Paleolithic nutrition. His book is an easy read and he actually had me laughing throughout most of the book.

Week 1 we followed Robb's suggested recipes almost to a tee.  From "Spaghetti(Squash) & (Turkey)Meatballs" to some amazing Paleo Ice Cream that my fiancé Angela made using coconut milk, egg yolks, vanilla & honey.  We really had a lot of fun because there are so many options when eating Paleo and we actually never felt like we were "missing out" on anything.  I had little or no cravings and my energy levels were immediately 10X of what they were last week. Actually, it wasn't so much my energy levels being up, I didn;t feel like I was always crashing.  I am an admitted cheese & bread whore and those are two things you won't find in the Paleo Diet. And two things I surprisingly didn't miss (all that much). I did have a moment of weakness while meeting my business partner at Panera Bread. I ordered a salad with chicken and they put a warm and oh so tempting piece of a baguette on the side... well, let's just say I went with the little red guy on my left shoulder on this one.

We haven't weighed ourselves in or taken measurements to set benchmarks but probably should have. So we don;t have much to show you as it relates to results.  Angela and I didn't necessarily start this to "lose weight" but to reap the MANY health rewards of this program. We will be posting various recipes and pics as we get cranking!
